Throne of Skulls - Mike

So, the first person to send me anything about their experiences at the event was Mike. I'll leave him to make any comments about the pictures, I'll just divide them up by game.

First a word from Mike.
I went to the GT this weekend trying to keep a open mind. I knew it wasn't an all or nothing tournament like it was before and so decided not to take my all or nothing Eldar list.

Instead i took my Imperial Fists which several people had commented they liked on their previous outing. People still said they liked them and i got 5 fun games with them (3 losses and 2 wins). these games, without exception felt far more like the pickup games i get at a gaming night in my FLGS and didn't have the same level of pressure i've experienced in previous years where each game takes you one step closer to winning the GT (or not as the case is 90% of the time) and so i had far less picky rules arguments, far less of my opponent running to a judge to quibble and far less feeling like i was getting screwed over if i didnt do the same. in fact in the whole weekend the only time either me or my opponent opened a rulebook or codex was when my opponent couldnt remember the AP of a specific type of sternguard ammo.

On the other hand, when results time came i can honestly say i am none the wiser. I didnt get a best army vote but still got a point which a judge tells me you get for turning up  which if that was explained in the rules pack it wasnt done very well since i missed it and i dont know how well i did in the context of the tournament, only that i'm halfway down the pack compared to other space marine players.

Overall, i enjoyed myself more, I just wish the final scores were delivered in the old style that everyone knows and loves.

Vs. Blood Angels? (there where a few armies masquerading as other things)

Game 2
Vs. Imperial Guard.

Game 3
Vs. Orks.

Game 4
Rather confusingly Vs. Imperial fists, lol.

Game 5.
Vs. Space Wolves.

Thoughts, comments and other input are (as usual) most welcome.

  1. Everyones saying they had a decent time, generally played good games, but NO-ONE knows how well or not well they've done, or who won or anything.

Maybe they're just taking the ethos 'Its the taking part that counts" too far?

As for the actual post mikes army looks cool still, ant the fists V fists games is easy one army is luminous yellow, the one that isnt is mikes lol.

  2. In an event like this, does 'doing well' require you to set your own goals and standards, your own terms of success, and do the legwork of evaluation yourself?

I rather like the sound of that. I'm beginning to sound like a stuck record with all my 'it sounds great apart from the part where it's not a tournament and calling it one is frankly disingenuous' but once more, with feeling...

  3. well at least it looks like somebody just won "most orks on the table at one time"

  4. @ Dethtron - The Ork player in question had painted a triangle pattern all around the outside edge of each Ork base in different colours for each squad. It must have took him fucking ages.

  5. @ Von - I think in an event like this you need a slightly different mindset. That doesn't make it bad, just different.
I may therefore go to the one later this year and take something optimised to fuck and see if I get lynched at the door, lol.

  7. also, i did ok, with a nice army that no-one has ever complained about being cheesy and i didnt get a single best army nomination so taking an uber competitive army clearly wont do that much harm as it seems the best army nominations were clustered on choice nice armies despite you being able to vote based on any criteria you could possibly make up. i voted for the guy with the pretty space wolf army who nailed me in a turn, mostly because he was sporing and never once rubbed it in and thanked me for not sulking after the game!
