Malifaux for Beginners - Black Joker

Editors Note - This tutorial is for version 1.5 of the Malifaux rules and has been left available for reference only. Some Malifaux 2nd Edition Tutorials can be found here...as well as quite a few of these old ones, lol.

Malifaux uses a deck of cards instead of the dice that your all most likely used to in the majority of miniature and board games. As well as the traditional 52 suit cards Malifaux also makes use of both the Jokers, One Red and the other Black.

The Black Joker is utilised in a number of ways...

Firstly the Black Joker is the lowest value card in the deck and has a value of 0. The observant amongst you will notice that the card itself has no suit on it and unlike the Red Joker this is because for the purposes of abilities and Triggers it has no suit at all.

Secondly when drawn for a Damage Flip the Black Joker cause no Damage (Dg) whatsoever.

Additionally, when drawn for Heal flips and Wound Reduction flips the Black Joker doesn't restore any Wounds (Wd) or reduces Wound (Wd) taken in any way. If flipped in a Duel the Black Joker cannot be swapped for a card from your Control Hand though you can use the Use Soulstone Ability to add a card to it. A more detailed tutorial on Soulstone use can be found here.

It is worth noting however that if you draw both the Red and Black Jokers you have to use the Black Joker which is unfortunate....

Do we need examples for this one?

Example 1

The player has flipped the Black Joker...he is now very sad and his opponent is very happy...whatever he or she was trying to do has failed utterly...

Should you draw the Black Joker as part of your Control Hand most people leave it in there and accept that there hand is always going to be one useful card short. It's a lot better than it appearing from the deck at the worst possible moment.
