Unboxing Malifaux - Molly's 'Take Back the Night' Starter Box

It seems like a night for Horror...or should I say 'Horrors'...

The 'Take Back the Night' box contains enough parts for six miniatures...namely Molly, her Totem Necrotic Machine (2SS), Philip and the Nanny (8SS) and three Crooligans (4SS each). It also contains stat cards for each one and five upgrade cards four of which are for Molly and one that's for any model with the Horror rule.

This makes the Soulsstone value of the box...

Molly Squidpiddge (0), Necrotic Machine (2), Philip and the Nanny (8), Crooligans (4, 4, 4) Total (22) or (26) with a maximum Soulstone cache and (32) with maximum 'out of the box' upgrades.

The box has one sprue in it as well as the aforementioned cards.

You can see larger versions of the pictures by clicking on them and they're high enough resolution so you can copy them to your own desktop and zoom in if you so desire...

Sprues

Stat Cards

Lets have a look at each of these in turn...should there be any assembly issues with any of the models then they will be listed in the appropriate section and you can view larger versions of the smaller pictures by clicking on them.

Instructions

Like many of my other Resurrectionist models they're mounted on cobblestone bases created as per this tutorial here.

Molly Squidpiddge
The Sprue

Assembled
No real issues with this one. The arms are thin but the joining points are large enough and even the separate piece of hair goes on simply enough.

Necrotic Machine
The Sprue

Assembled
This ones a bit of a bitch therefore the usual 'models with lots of twiddly bits' rules apply. Only remove parts from the sprue as you need them, I'd advise working over a surface that bits don't disappear into and tweezers are useful if you have sausage fingers like mine...here we go then...

I'd attach the tube parts onto the body first as it's going to be far more tricky to get them into place if you're worried about knocking the arms off. The needle parts are thin and delicate and also have a quite small claw piece on each one which could easily be knocked off and the separate feet are also small. The aforementioned parts with the 'needles' on them have a flat face and a detailed one so you shouldn't get them mixed up. This is a 'tweezers and patience' model if ever there was one but fortunately is redeemed by looking pretty damn amazing once assembled...

Philip and the Nanny
The Sprue

Assembled
You'll notice from the sprue pictures above that the wheels are attached to a cross piece by a tiny joint section which goes into the main carriage body and you should be very careful when removing the part from the sprue as well as avoiding putting any pressure on the wheels when you push the piece they're attached to into the carriage body. Once assembled there's some support as the bar coming off them at the back meets up with their equivalent opposite wheel. You'll be happy to know that the 'Nanny' is very simple in comparison.

Here's some close-ups...

Crooligans
The Sprue

Assembled

Assembled - Crooligan 1
Be careful when removing his knives from the sprue as they attach to it halfway up the blade and could snap if you get careless.

Assembled - Crooligan 2
You may want to dry-fit the left arm as it meets the teddy bear to avoid leaving a gap but other than that this model is very simple indeed. The knife blade is also quite slim...

Assembled - Crooligan 3
Only four parts to this model (though two of them are separate feet...well...boots). The boots each have a slightly different length attachment point so you shouldn't be able to mix them up. The 'spear' attaches to the body via a pair of tabs which line up with slots on the body. The fit on mine wasn't perfect but after a tiny bit of scraping they fitted just fine.

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

  1. Thanks Gmort! Another excellent unboxing.
I have a mixed feeling about Molly - although new plastic model looks OK, the old metal one is more appealing to me.
Rest of the plastic models are really, really good.

    1. I'll probably end up using them both on and off. I have a tendency to mix and match between old and new models in crews anyway.
