Unboxing Malifaux - Bad Ink Fate Deck

There are now quite a wide variety of Fate Decks available for the game of Malifaux and though I don't have them all I like to do overviews of the ones that I do. As with anything opinion on styles of art is somewhat subject so I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions about whether you like them or not...

This particular Fate Deck comes in a nice presentation box with a magnetic clip on one side of the internal container once the decorative sleeve is slid off. Here's a picture of the slip case art before we look at the cards themselves...

...as well as a picture of the card rear which I'm obviously only going to need to show once...

The Red and Black Jokers

The Suits
The one to five cards pattern becomes slightly more elaborate on the six to ten ones and in turn the eleven, twelve and thirteen cards have a slightly more elaborate version of the pattern that's on the others but don't have the distinctly different pictures that we've come to expect from other Fate Decks. They also have an indicator for weak, moderate or severe damage on the corner for your convenience.

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

  1. I heard it was some sort of magnetic box or something. Is that true? It sounded really classy and different...

    1. The box does have a magnetic clip. I mention it in the article.

I can do some pictures of that bit and add them in later if you wish?

  3. I'm a little surprised they went with crows, masks, and tomes, but then used a pistol instead of a ram. Still like it though!

    1. I thought that was an odd choice myself. Perhaps it fit the art style better?

  4. Love them :D and that it says in the corner if it's high moderate or low is great for new players :)

  5. Just out of curiosity, how does the durability feel on the cards? I like the material of the arcane fate deck, but don't like the art. I have one from the starter box, but the paper material has definitely shown signs of wear already.

    1. They're less slippy than the Arcane ones but still seem to have equivalent levels of durability. Of course only time will tell...

    1. I believe the box is big enough to hold the cards if they're in protectors as there's a fair bit of extra space in there.

  7. How do you play them? I just bought a deck of exactly those you had on pictures above but I'm not sure how to play them.

    1. They're designed to be used along with the miniatures skirmish game 'Malifaux' by Wyrd Games...without the game they're just a pretty set of cards ;-)
