The Battle of Tyrok Fields
Justin D Hill
Justin Hill's trilogy of "origin stories" for Castellan Creed comes to an end with this massive tale of an equally massive betrayal on Cadia itself. With a new incursion from the Eye of Terror expected, Imperial forces muster on the fortress world. When treachery strikes on Tyrok Fields, it falls to Creed and his loyal Cadian Eighth to rally the defenders, defeat the traitors and secure Cadia – for if they fail, it might be the first step in the fall of the Imperium itself.

This tale takes the classic story of the treachery of the Volscani Cataphracts (first told in 2003's Codex: Eye of Terror) and shows these historic events from the perspective of Creed and his closest comrades. It's the tale of how he earned his title of Lord-Castellan, and is the perfect thing to read while you wait for your copy of 'Cadia Stands' to arrive.

The first Warhammer 40,000 novel
(Well, sort of)
You've probably noticed that this month has seen celebrations of 30 years of Warhammer 40,000, and we thought it would be fun to look back at the very first Warhammer 40,000 novel. Of course, we all know that the very first was Ian Watson's 1993 book 'Space Marine', a bizarre (and wonderful) adventure that reflects a unique take on a setting that was still in its infancy. It's well worth a read, but it's not the first true Warhammer 40,000 novel.

That honour goes to 'First and Only' by Dan Abnett. Published in 1999 by Black Library, this first (but certainly not only) volume in the Gaunt's Ghosts series follows Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and his men – the last survivors of a dead world – on a desperate mission to stop a sinister conspiracy that threatens to derail an Imperial crusade. You can download 'First and Only' now and experience a piece of Warhammer 40,000 history – and a fantastic novel to boot.
