Unboxing Malifaux - Kirai's 'Vengeful Spirits' Starter Set

You shouldn't run with scissors...unless you're a spirit of vengeance apparently...

The 'Vengeful Spirits' box contains enough parts for seven miniatures (three of which are 'Summoned' and therefore have a 0 Soulstone cost)...namely Kirai Ankoku, Ikiryo (0SS), two Seishin (0SS each), her Lost Love Totem (4SS), and two Onryo (5SS each). It also contains stat cards for each one and six upgrade cards four of which are for Kirai (two of which are 'Limited' so you can have one or the other, not both), one that's for Kirai or any Spirit and one that's for Datsue Ba (Which isn't a model you get in the starter set before you think I've missed something out).

This makes the Soulsstone value of the box...

Kirai Ankoku (0), Ikiryo (0), Seishin (0, 0), Lost Love (4), Onryo (5, 5) Total (14) or (17) with a maximum Soulstone cache and (22) with maximum 'out of the box' upgrades.

Editors Note - This is one of the lowest points value 'Starter Sets' and will require some additional purchases for most games.

The box has one main sprues in it as well as the aforementioned cards...

Sprue.

Stat Cards.

Lets have a look at each of these in turn...should there be any assembly issues with any of the models then they will be listed in the appropriate section and you can view larger versions of the smaller pictures by clicking on them. Here's the instructions as well...just in case...

Kirai Ankoku.

The Sprue

Assembled
Be careful when removing the scissors from the sprue as they're quite thin and she also has the apparently obligatory separate face. Also she's balanced on the toes of one foot so expect a few transportation 'incidents', lol.

Lost Love - Totem.

The Sprue

Assembled
I refuse to believe that the tiny piece of hair needs to be separate...but it is...

Comparison.
I don't have the original metal 'Lost Love' model so am unable to show a comparison picture...should I acquire one it'll go here...

Ikiryo.

The Sprue

Assembled
Large parts so this model has few issues other than a few joins that might need filling...

Seishin.

Seishin 1 - Sprue

Seishin 1 - Assembled
Attach the tongue piece before gluing the head halves together and there's a possibility you'll have some filling to do as mine are going to need some though others I know have had no such issues...

Seishin 2 - Sprue

Seishin 2 - Assembled
Attach the tongue piece before gluing the head halves together and there's a possibility you'll have some filling to do as mine are going to need some though others I know have had no such issues...

Onryo.

Onryo - General Assembly.
The body sections are fairly substantial...the arms are significantly more fiddly and (with one exception) have less obvious location points making dry-fitting a good idea. Both models also have a small separate belt section that you'll need to be careful with as they can be a pain to get at the correct angle.

The Sprue

Onryo 1 - Assembled
The underside of one sleeve is separate...

Onryo 2 - Assembled
Other than the tips mentioned at the start of this section it's worth noting that the right arm needs to be inserted before the sleeve is glued to the body or you wont get it into place.

Here's a group picture.

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

  1. I've got my own metal crew of these fully painted but grr, how nice are these?

  2. I'm also in the same boat that thinks the separate lock of hair for the lost love MUST NOT be necessary! I didn't even see it on the sprue at first! Great looking model though in the end. MY favourite crew box! Thanks GMort, as always :)
