Happy New Year and All That

I hope that Christmas was kind to you and that you have had a good 2016 so far. Kez and I had a lovely time – Sammy turned two just after Christmas so this year he was able to appreciate both events a lot more. A month on and he still mentions that Santa visited.

On the work front, I’ve entered a slow patch. Plenty of work, but nothing new to talk about. One of the downsides of being a writer and putting out a monthly newsletter is that sometimes projects go on for a while and others start but cannot be announced.
In that vein, I’ve been doing... stuff.  Mostly I have been trying to work on an original fantasy novel, as I mentioned in my last newsletter. So far it hasn’t quite happened, just a few thousand words, but this week and February are clear of most other concerns so I am still hopeful I’ll get it done before starting my next Black Library commission.
I’m also aiming to write a couple of stories for the first releases by Alternate Realities, a new indie press run by someone I’ve known for a few years – Matt Sylvester.  This came up after I wrote the Looking Forward to 2016 posts linked in the Blog Round-up. If you are a writer, check out the submissions info.
I might also try the 50-word flash fiction competition for the Derby Book festival.
Tomorrow (last Tuesday as you read this!) the second games evening of 2016 will take place – that makes it the first back-to-back gaming meet-up I’ve managed in many years. We might have another crack at Battlestar Galactica – the Board Game, or someone has offered to bring Chaos in the Old World. By the time you read this you’ll have probably seen the photos on Facebook or Twitter... It’s tricky, this newsletter-writing business.

Competition Time!

The Emperor Expects

My novel The Emperor Expects is the third instalment in The Beast Arises series - due for publication mid-February.   To celebrate, I'm giving away a copy in #theemperorexpects competition, and my newsletter subscribers get an early link to find out how to win.
#theemperorexpects to be amused!

The Lion

The new Horus Heresy anthology War Without End was published on 23rd January, and contains my short storyBy The Lion's Command.  But if you want to read the preceding events that led to the splitting of the Dark Angels fleet at Perditus, you'll want to read my novella The Lion.
"Fighting a daemonic incursion within their fleet, the Dark Angels stumble into a conflict between the Iron Hands and Death Guard. The Lion is finally forced to choose as a side as the Iron Hands and Death Guard come to blows over a mysterious artefact.

And when he claims it for his own, the Dark Angels primarch sets his Legion on a course that will haunt them for ten thousand years."
Here's what others have had to say:
“With an interesting ending, [The Lion] is a great novella that adds to the overall Horus Heresy history nicely. It is a story that will please Dark Angels and Horus Heresy fans alike.”
– Stefan Fergus, Civilian Reader
“[The Lion] is my favourite story of the collection [The Primarchs], the Dark Angels are great and I loved the depiction of the fight on board ship which is dramatic, claustrophobic and excellently paced. The space based story makes a nice change and the author manages to weave a powerful story. ”
– Antony Jones,m SF Book Reviews

Newsletter Q&A

Jay asked on the website - With the news that the GW Specialist Games unit is being re-established (in some shape or form) will you be getting involved in a game designer/background writer POV? Clearly you were heavily involved with some of those games first time around!
They are currently recruiting on-site staff and I have no desire to give up my freelance life. If they want to commission work, that’d be great but I don’t see that happening. I will be letting them know I’m available for playtesting duties if required :)
If you want to ask a question, just reply to the newsletter and I'll get back to you as soon as my schedule allows.  I'll pick the best question to go in the next newsletter, and combine them all into a blog post for the website.  Click the button below for the full Q&A round-up for January.

Blog Post Round-Up

As has become customary at the end of the year, I've taken a look back at 2015 and concluded I'll need more holidays in 2016.
I then blogged about my work plans for 2016 and realised I don't have time for a weekend break, let alone a holiday.  Blogging about my hobby plans (more gaming, more painting), has inspired me to make the most of my free time however.
Another popular blog has been myThree Top Tips for Black Library Submissions - I know there are many people who would love the chance to write for BL, and hopefully this will help if you are taking the plunge this time around.
I also published a reading guide for my various Raven Guard stories, to accompany the general release of Ravenlord on January 2nd.

Kickstarter

I should give props to Tiny Epic Western here, which I have backed. I could also mention the last few days ofShakespeare versus Cthulhu.  Both are going strong and finishing soon, so I think I’ll use this spot to promote Age of Tyrants instead.

Games Workshop’s ‘Epic’ games (6mm scale) were my most frequent plays when I was a youngster and Age of Tyrants ticks all of the boxes. It’s written by Mark Brendan, once a colleague of mine on White Dwarf and a thoroughly decent (and clever) chap. If I had more time and money I’d  back Age of Tyrants in an instant, but I don’t, so sharing it with you will need to suffice.

Recent Releases

The last few weeks have seen a whole host of my stories published.  My Horus Heresy novella Ravenlord went on general release, as did my Advent story Lord of the Cosmic Gate, the French and German editions of Legacies of Betrayal, and the Horus Heresy anthology War Without End, which contains my story By The Lion's Command.

Competition Winner

One of the perks of subscribing to my mailing list is that you get entered into the bi-monthly draw to win a personalised, signed copy of one of my books.  This month's winner is Alex Kennedy who will be receiving a copy of the new Ultramarines omnibus which contains my novella Catechism of Hate.  The next winner will be chosen in March.
