Throne of Skulls - Mike - Day 1

Next up is Mike.

Me and Mike have completely different design philosophies when it comes to armies. Whereas I would find a unit configuration I like and simply duplicate it a number of times Mike would create a similar number of different units that were capable of doing the same job. Though the end result is broadly similar, the way the armies are used is completely different due to the varying design methods we both use.

Mike has recently started his own blog. Though it's in it's early stages of development it can be found here if you fancy a look and he assures me that he'll start updating it more regularly at some point ;-)

Lets get started then,

      7 Death Company
      1 Rhino

Total Roster Cost: 1749

Game 1 Vs. Tau.
Mission - Seize Ground*, Deployment - Dawn of War
Result - Loss

* When announcing the mission the Tournament organiser said one mission type and put a different one on the display. This resulted in a large number of people playing the stated mission (Seize Ground) rather than the apparently correct displayed one (Capture and Control). I must point out however that this was the only organisation screw-up that I was aware of the whole weekend.

Opponents Army List.
2 x Commanders,
2 x Crisis Suits,
1 x 3 Stealth Suits,
3 x 10 Fire Warriors,
1 x 6 Fire Warriors with Carbines,
2 x Hammerheads with Ion Cannons,
1 x 3 Broadsides,
Fuck loads** of drones.

** Not sure that the phrase 'fuck-loads' can be accurately quantified but I'm presuming it means 'lots'...

Significant Events.
Power Weapon Sergeant ties-up Commander for 4 rounds of Combat.
Turn 5 I would have won, Turn 6 it was a draw, Turn 7 my opponent won.

Game 2 Vs. Chaos Daemons.
Mission - Annihilation, Deployment - Spearhead.
Result - Win

Opponents Army List.
Keeper of Secrets,
1 x 6 Fiends,
1 x 4 Flamers,
1 x 20 Daemonettes,
1 x 10 Bloodletters,
1 x 9 Bloodletters,
1 x 10 Pink Horrors,
Daemon Prince,
Soul Grinder.

Significant Events.
Death Company Rhino should have been mobbed***.
Opponent didn't roll enough 6's (to rend presumably).
Fiends died when charged.

*** I believe Mike is referring to a tactic that I use with my Daemons whereby I charge a vehicle with my Fiends or Fleshhounds and surround it completely so a vehicle wrecked/destroyed result leaves nowhere for the unit inside to be deployed therefore destroying all (or nearly all) of it. It's a somewhat unpleasant tactic when used against you as there's basically bugger-all you can do to prevent it if your within range.

Note the gap at the rear of the Death Company Rhino from which they can disembark...

...Which they promptly do. Had that gap been closed the unit inside could have been effectively neutralised. Now they're free to charge and destroy the Fiends next turn.

The four Flamers (almost) completely wiped out that group of Marines with 4x Breath of Chaos.
Game 3 Vs. Space Marines.
Mission - Sieze Ground, Deployment - Pitched Battle.
Result - Win.

Opponents Army List.
Sternguard in Land Raider Redeemer,
3 x Tactical Squads with Power weapon, Flamer + Multi-Melta in Rhino,
2 x 2 Landspeeder with Multi-Melta + Heavy Flamer.

Significant Events.
Turn one Corbulo used his re-roll to turn a roll of 2 into a 6 in order to destroy a Land Raider.
Tycho and Vulkan battled to the death (Vulkan's death apparently).

The Death Company get ready to do their thing...

The last thing that a Razorback driver want's to see pulling up alongside...

Vulkan and Tycho discuss their differences in a civilised manner...with a duel to the death ;-)

Well that isn't going to end well...
Day one over with. Day two should be appearing tomorrow.

Throne of Skulls - Chris - Day 2

Following on from Day 1,

There's not a lot of notes for Chris's pair of games from day two but fortunately the next two people's articles have quite a lot of detail so that should make up for it.

Game 4 Vs. Tau.
Mission - Annihilation, Deployment - Pitched Battle.
Result - Win.

Opponents Army List.
Commander + 2 Guards,
4 x Fire Warriors,
4 x Devilfish,
3 x 3 Broadsides.

Significant Events.
Apparently at one point Chris rolled an improbable four sixes to Rend with one of his Assault Cannons.

The giant finger in the sky directs it's troops towards the enemy.

The pinnacle of Tau anti-armour technology.....hides behind some Devilfish...

I hope that transports moved far enough so that Dreadnought is hitting on 6's...

Editors Note : This game didn't last particularly long as the Blood Angels speed and fire-power seemed to take the Tau player completely by surprise. Though to be fair some bad dice rolls may have had an impact as well.

Game 5 Vs. Imperial Guard.
Mission - Sieze Ground, Deployment - Dawn of War.
Result - Draw.

Opponents Army List.
Company Command Squad c/w Creed and Kell,
Command Squad with Plasma,
2 x 3 Infantry Platoons with Lascannon,
1 x Veteran unit with 3x Meltaguns,
2 x Sentinels.

Editors Note: There were definitely some Leman Russes on the table when I was watching the game as well as some Chimeras and the pictures seem to agree with my recollection of events, lol.

Significant Events.
Apparently there weren't any.

Apparently that model in particular was being singled out for destruction...

The players appear to have given up and gone home...

...and they're back.....

Well that's Chris's day two come to an end with his total results adding up to two wins and three draws.

Next up will be Mikes Blood Angels...

Throne of Skulls - Chris - Day 1

Sorry about the gap but real life has an annoying and tedious tendency to interrupt my blogging time, lol.

Editors Note : If any of the owners of the opposing armies in these various articles would like to drop me an e-mail with some of their own opinions on the respective matches then I'd be happy to insert their comments into the appropriate reports if they so desire.

Next up is Chris's Blood Angels army. You might remember Chris's beautifully painted Space Wolves army from early this year. This years army was also extremely well done but sadly missed out on a best painted nomination but he's not the only person unhappy about the nominations anyway, lol.

Chris has his own blog but it's not exactly regularly updated, but I said I'd mention it so I have done ;-)

Chris's own list consisted of the following,

Chris's Blood Angels.
Captain = 100
Power Sword = 15

10* Tactical = 170
Meltagun = 5
Lascannon = 10

Assault Squad = 100
Power Fist= 25
Razorback = 55
Assault Cannon =35 (-35 for no jump packs)

Baal Predator = 115
Heavy Bolter sponsons =30

Scouts = 75
5* Camo Cloaks = 15
Missile Launcher = 10

Furioso = 125
Blood Talons = 0

Stormraven = 200
Twin-linked Multi-melta = 0
Hurrican Bolters = 30
Extra Armour = 15

Game 1 Vs. Space Wolves.
Mission - Capture and Control, Deployment - Dawn of War.
Result - Draw

Opponents Army List.
Wolf Lord,
Rune Priest,
6 x Wolf Guard,
3 x 8 Grey Hunters with attached Wolf Guard in Rhino.
2 x Long Fang Units c/w Missile Launchers,
Land Raider.

Significant Events.
Indestructible Land Raider on my objective (Angry face).

Game 2 Vs. Orks.
Mission - Annihilation, Deployment - Spearhead.
Result - Win

Opponents Army List.
2 x Big Mek c/w Kustom Force Field,
3 x 3 Killa kanz,
2 x Deff Dreds,
44 x Boyz (I'm not sure how many squads these were divided across and Chris doesn't say),
30 x Lootas (again, I'm not sure if these were 2 x15 or 3 x10 or some mixture),
3 x Buggyz with Rokkits.

Significant Events.
13 - 3 (I'm guessing that it's the result that's significant to Chris but I could be wrong, lol)

Game 3 Vs. Eldar.
Mission - Sieze Ground, Deployment - Pitched Battle.
Result - Draw

Opponents Army List.
Fire Dragons,
Dire Avengers,
Striking Scorpions.
(some of these were obviously in transports but Chris doesn't say which)

Significant Events.
'Jammy' taking objectives (I'm not sure whether Chris is referring to himself or his opponent but given the average Eldar players tendency to 'steal' objectives at the last minute with fast moving vehicles you'd have to leap to certain conclusions....)

We'll finish off Chris's games tomorrow after which we'll be moving onto those of Mike.
