I'm currently running a Vampire the Masquerade chronicle using the 5th
Edition rule-set for a small group of fellow role-players. These are the
chronicles of their adventures.
Our chronicle is set in Los Angeles and features a small group of
Camarilla agents sent into the 'Free States' to bring them back under
Camarilla control. Over a year of plotting allowed the coterie to gain
control of the three North-Eastern Baronies and a large part of a
fourth. Now they are moving on to the final stage of their campaign
and have their eyes on taking over the entire city, either directly or
indirectly.

The now obligatory warning bit - Unlike my other RPG write-ups this one will contain swearing, sexual references and other references that might offend. If you can't tell the difference between real peoples opinions and grown-ups role-playing predators who crave blood then this probably won't be for you. I've also used actual photographs to represent some characters which I'll give acknowledgements to at the end if I've any idea who they are.

The introduction to this campaign, the first story and all the other parts can be found at the following links and are in chronological order. If you'd prefer a summary of each session rather than read everything then there's a more detailed link page HERE as well as links to the first episode of each story in the blog sidebar.

As I have written out introductions and dialogue for certain NPC's and
some location descriptions I'll post these more or less as I wrote them
so they'll be in a 'reading to the group' style and they'll also be
in blue so you can tell them apart from the more traditional write-up
sections and occasionally an obscure Premonition will turn up
in purple. If I think something needs a bit of out of character explanation then
those will get a storytellers note that will helpfully be in red. Anything covered via player handouts will also be in blue as they're written in the same style as introductions and the
like. Where particular NPC's have a mention in a faction profile you
will be able to reach it by clicking on their name or faction beneath
their picture.
Storytellers Note - Due to a Covid related local lockdown in the
area in which I live, our group is currently unable to meet up.
I'm therefore doing some of the characters solo
endeavours via messenger and the group activities I am
attempting to do via messengers video 'room' app.
As our experiment with Messenger Rooms was more or less a success
apart from a brief loss of sound and someone disappearing for five
minutes due to a problem their end, We'll be using that until
we're allowed human contact once more. This session is,
however more or less a solo endeavour for Michael.
Week 4 - On the Brink of War
Introduction
The baronies are beginning to look to their own interests once more as
each attempts to be the first to become active now that the werewolf
situation has become a problem for the the Garou alone, rather than one
for the entire city and all it's supernatural inhabitants.
Michael Tomassio
In a last ditch attempt to turn the current chaos to the coteries advantage,
Michael has arranged for meetings with several of his most influential
kindred contacts. Though he has many potential sources of information at his
disposal, time is at a premium so he has decided to focus his efforts on
those he believes will garner him the greatest results.
Gloria Martinez - El Hermandad Baron, Allison Maller - Baron of
Anaheim
He began with Victor Girard, a Toreador who was currently the power behind
Baron Gloria Martinez of El Hermandad and Baron Allison Maller of Anaheim.
Both were childer of noted Anarch, Salvador Garcia so had additional status
within the Free States based on that fact alone.
Scene One - Victor Girard
Victor Girard - Toreador Media Magnate Right Hand of Barons Martinez and Maller |
Once Michael had Victor alone, he began an impassioned appeal that he hoped
would sway Victor, if only temporarily.
"I believe Marius is quite unpredictable, to MOST people. Your work has
been impressive, I am pleased that you are not over extending and
intending to provoke a war. Let’s not forget there are plenty of examples
of strong Kindred, Kindred who commanded cities THIS city being deposed
because the wrong, or right, other Kindred disapproved of their actions,
their war mongering if you will. I would not want you to be on a similar
side of history Victor."
Victor indicated that Michael should continue, he was making several good
points and Victor hadn't gotten where he was without the ability to
assimilate useful information he could potentially turn to his advantage.
Michael also knew that his ability to second guess the notoriously
unpredictable Gangrel 'Fixer' was something that other kindred were
beginning to become aware of.
"It’s easy to lose our heads in the rush for and consolidation of power,
of our empires. We cannot build without a firm foundation, I believe The
Free States are working towards that firm foundation."
"I’ve talked to Priss, we are acquaintances – I’m sure you’re aware. She
is...informing…her people to stop antagonising your borders. I assume you
can return the favour for me?"
Victor thought about the request for a moment. Michael could see he was
weighing the advantages of not needing to worry about Priss's aggression,
against the possibility that she was likely to renege as soon as he withdrew
people from the border. He appeared to come to a decision.
"You make some valid points Michael. I will agree not to threaten Priss's
borders as you have requested for as long as she is willing to
reciprocate. However I will give no such assurances about the Crypts Sons
domain, they are still testing the border for weaknesses and I have no
intention of giving Hank the benefit of the doubt as I am with Priss.
Agreed?"
As it was the best Michael could have hoped for in the circumstances, he
gave his agreement. He then informed Priss that the deal was done before she
did anything to threaten the agreement. He had to speak to her anyway. He
had, after all, made certain promises to her to secure her own initial
agreement.
Scene Two - Priss, Baron of 'The Border'
Michael had agreed to supplement her forces current obsolete weapons
provided by Hank, for more up to date hardware. Though Michael disliked the
idea of using weaponry as a bargaining chip, it did have the advantage of
making an incursion by Victor or Hank into her territory far less likely.
The balance was still precarious, but it was better than no balance at all
in his opinion.
"Priss, Your hardware requirement will be arriving imminently, I’ve
talked with Vin regarding it. Apparently my choices considered style as
well as substance but he thinks that your preference would be more
military and utilitarian. I leave such considerations to him but I'm
sure you'll be satisfied with the delivery."
This wasn't strictly true as Michael had intended to use the weapons they
had salvaged from the MacNeils armoury anyway. It didn't hurt however, to
periodically remind other kindred that the Brujah Vin was something that
he had at his disposal. He also noted that the apartment block in which
Priss based herself was undergoing some construction work. It seemed that
she was reinforcing her headquarters as she had claimed she was going to.
Priss's gang had been dubbed 'The Survivors', due to them being the few
who had come back from the assault upon the vampire hunters concealed
within the ranks of the mortal gang known as The Blood. They were
therefore quite hardened as warriors and a significant threat despite
their relatively low numbers. The only weakness was a lack of equipment,
something the shipment before them was about to mitigate considerably.
Michael had supplied them a dozen M4's, half a dozen MP5's, several of
which had inbuilt suppressors, twenty handguns and significant quantities
of ammunition.
He had kept back two of the three one hundred and fifty round double drums
for Daniel and Vin but had given Priss's forces the third. The real gift
however was the military grade body armour. No use to the kindred of
course, but it would give her mortal forces a considerable edge over their
opposition.
Michael knew that Daniel was going to sulk about the gift due to his intense
dislike of Priss but sometimes a leader had to make decisions of which ones
underlings disapproved.
Scene Three - Marius and Victoria
Feeling the need to compensate for his arms dealing with an act of charity,
he contacted Marius about making some kind of charitable addition to Aegis's
renovation of Downtowns Skid Row.
Michael was also aware that Marius planned to have some kindred friendly
facilities installed along with the traditional building projects. As Nines
also had an interest in this area, Michael could see that getting involved
in the scheme early on had several advantages.
Marius wasn't available which unfortunately required Michael to speak to the
Gangrel's psychotic personal assistant Victoria. She seemed to be on board
with the idea and informed Michael that Marius would contact him in the
later stages of the 'Skid Row' development when community centres and the
like were being created. He could sponsor something that, in Victoria's
words "...would appeal to Nines 'Power to the People' bollocks..."
Victoria Anne - Ancient Ghoul of Marius Personal Assistant and Fleshcrafter |
Having witnessed Victoria skinning a man alive, he was well aware what high
regard the ghoul had for normal human beings. Unfortunately he had to be
somewhat diplomatic with her as he needed her help in training himself in an
obscure vampiric discipline with which his own Toreador bloodline had an
aptitude.
The ghoul had been the servant of a particularly horrendous Tzimisce warlord
from which she had learned much about the discipline known as Vicissitude,
as well as the knowledge of body crafts required to utilise it to it's full
potential.
As he turned to leave, Victoria bought up the subject. "I've cleared some time in my schedule so as to pass on some of my skills
in flesh-crafting to you. Marius said you wished to learn to control your
'talent' so as to not utilise it accidentally to cause harm?" Those hadn't been Michaels exact words but he understood why Marius would
have presumed that was his goal. He could also see that Victoria had no idea
whatsoever why he would care.
Deciding that now was as good a time as any, he prepared himself for his
first lesson.
Scene Four - A Lesson in Fleshcrafting
Leanna - Duskborn 'Shepherdess' of Blood Dolls |
Michael's first thought was how exactly Victoria fuelled her abilities as
she was still a human, albeit an ancient one.
A moment later two women entered the room, escorted by Leanna, who gave
Michael a brief nod of greeting. "These young ladies are Lauryn and Lillia of Marius's herd. They've
volunteered to assist you this evening..."
From the glazed look in their eyes and their languid movements, Michael was
dubious about Leanna's definition of a volunteer. Despite being far more
pleasant company than Victoria, Michael had his suspicions that in her own
way, the duskborn was equally morally bankrupt.
Michael watched as Victoria used her own hands to alter several basic
bodily parameters of the first girl. Height, build, facial features, skin
tone, and hair colour amongst other things. The changes were cosmetic and
minor in scope but the Toreador could see the potential of the ability for
more drastic changes.
"This Won't Hurt a Bit..." |
"You're a natural..." said Victoria cheerfully, and seemed to mean
it. "...lets see how you are with flesh and bone..."
Michael was less than happy with the results as they didn't quite match
his vision, like a painting that didn't quite capture the magic of the
scene it was a copy of. Victoria fine tuned Lillia's final look, more
finely sculpting cheekbones, evening out skin colour and a myriad of other
trivial details that Michael had missed. The ease with which Marius's
ghoul achieved the results she desired made his own successes feel
amateurish in comparison. He decided that he would perfect this skill like
he did his artistic endeavours. It would just take practice, a lot of
practice.
While Michael restored himself with a bottle of preserved blood provided
once more by Leanna, Victoria effortlessly restored the appearance of
their two models. Well, almost. Michael noticed some subtle differences in
figure, cheekbones and in one case eye-colour, the changes apparently
intentional.
"I think Lauryn looks so much better with green eyes, don't you?"
Michael wasn't sure he agreed, but nodded anyway. He saw little point in
antagonizing his teacher over such a trivial point.
With dawn rapidly approaching, Michael thanked his host and then returned
to one of his own havens.
Scene Five - Isaac, Baron of Hollywood
The next evening, Michael retrieved the bottle of wine he'd acquired as a
gift and went to speak with his mentor and neighbour, Baron Isaac Abrams.
Isaac had agreed to meet in one of the rooms he kept at the The Los
Angeles County Museum of Art, an area considered to be neutral ground as
well as a sort of Elysium for the Toreador of the city. Normally such a
concept would be too close to the practices of the Camarilla to be
tolerated in the Free States, but no-one in the city was willing to
challenge Isaac over so minor a point of order. Especially of late as he
had become far more quick to anger, and far slower to forgive and forget.
Isaac was grateful for the gift of wine, recognising a splendid example
of the Blood Sommeliers craft. The Baron of Hollywood was a fan of
Leanna's blood wine creations and so was pleased to receive one as a
gift.
Michael knew that Isaac was one of the Barons that he would need to
convince of the rightness of his long-term plan for the city. Others he
could undermine or if necessary remove from the playing field. Isaac
however, was one of the ones that he lacked the power to truly oppose.
Turning him into a willing ally was therefore his only real option.
Once he was sure he had Isaac's attention, he began.
Nines Rodriguez - Brujah Potential Successor to Jeremy MacNeil |
Michael knew that Isaac believed that Nines had the potential to be a
great leader, potential he had explicitly told Michael wasn't being
utilised. He had no wish to slander Nines, with whom he'd recently
re-established a relationship, though at the same time he needed his
failings to stay foremost in Isaac's mind. As Michael's plan went
forward he needed his own, not Nines, qualities to be the ones that
Abrams associated with a leadership role amongst the Anarchs. Michael
continued.
"Perhaps a single leader is impractical, though you’d still need a
focal point. But their ultimate power should be derived from the power
of those that are held in their counsel. They are held to account by
the great powers in the Free States, they have to care about the
Kindred under their 'control' or they lose the thing that keeps them
in their position. Mortals in the United States and the United Kingdom
elect their representatives. With some tweaks that could work in L.A.
A system of checks and balances that both nurtures our downtrodden and
regulates the excesses of those in power so that we do not suffer the
same…issues…as the Camarilla."
Michael also realised that he was walking a fine line here. He needed
Isaac to believe he held the Anarch ideals foremost while at the same
time putting forward what was in many ways a radically different future
for the Anarch Free States. Deciding not to push the idea too far, this
early on, he changed the subject to a more immediate problem.
"Victor’s media empire is currently proving problematic, information
filters into him and rumour, gossip and scandal filter out like
carrion birds picking at the scraps. It is difficult for me to compete
with him in this space. I am looking into if things can be done
to…test…my erstwhile neighbour, after all if he succeeds then he is
clearly doing very well. I’m sure there are numerous articles I could
write that would point an uncomfortable spotlight in his direction,
but alas I am not much of a blogger…I believe it is called these
days."
Isaac took the bait and let Michael know that he would consider allowing
him an artistic outlet through his own media empire should an
appropriate opportunity become available.
Ralph Harwood - Ventrue Gang Leader |
"Perhaps I may be able to help with Harwood, I need to look into the
comings and goings in San Fernando, ensure that my promise to the
idealists are being kept by my side. Of course if I happen to get a
better understanding of what Hardwood is up to, I'd share them with
you before taking any personal action."
Michael was fully aware that Harwood was to a certain extent a problem
that he had created. It was Michael who had negotiated the agreement
which divided up the Barony of the Angels. He had also stipulated that
no factions that found themselves under a new Baron should be forced to
swear their allegiance to a Baron not of their choosing. The other
Barons had of course immediately ignored that part of the agreement.
Louis Fortier, Baron of West L.A. was, however, a man of his word so
despite Harwoods disrupting activities would not have him destroyed.
Isaac in turn would not destroy him without Fortiers go ahead out of his
respect for his fellow Baron and ally. That Harwood needed to be removed
was not in doubt, doing so without political fallout was unfortunately
the big problem.
Deciding this matter needed more thought, Michael lightened the tone
with a more social request.
"I believe that I should likely meet Ms Jeanette Voerman, us both soon
to be club owners in your domain. I was wondering if you might want to
make the introduction, perhaps attend a soiree with the both of us. It
is your domain, and you'd be an honoured guest. I understand that
Jeanette can be somewhat forward, and perhaps it may be more the
merrier as a form of insurance."
Isaac seemed to be amused at the thought of Michael meeting Jeanette and
agreed that a social engagement might be a good idea. He promised to "...see what he could arrange."
Scene Six - Mariel St. John
With Isaac being little immediate help with the Harwood situation, Michael
paid a visit to Baron Fortiers mistress and adopted childe, Mariel St.
John.
Michael's ally within the Camarilla had suggested that Louis could be
goaded into action using the Ventrue principle known as 'dignitas'. It was
this approach that he intended to suggest to Mariel.
Aside from breaches of the Traditions, the Ventrue clan knew of few crimes
greater than impugning another member's dignitas groundlessly as Ventrue,
even Anarch ones, take assaults on their stature very seriously.
Spreading rumours, taking credit for another's work, and insulting a
Ventrue without just cause, publicly or privately, are just a few of the
ways that Carmelita had informed him could be seen as an assault on
another Ventrue's dignitas. Doing so was a sure way to make an enemy for
all of unlife, and it could indeed be cause for severe punishment or
discipline.
Without the checks and balances that existed within the Camarilla, a
Ventrue Anarch would easily see the destruction of the upstart as entirely
reasonable, regardless of other promises. It was this that Michael wished
to manufacture as it would free Louis from his earlier agreement and allow
him to remove Harwood without any conflicts with his own code of honour.
Louis Fortier - Ventrue Baron of West L.A. |
Michael asked Mariel how viable it was to use someone loyal to them or her
that could goad Harwood into insulting Louis. Or alternatively provide
Ralph Harwood with something, then force him to have to admit that he was
given it or coerce him into taking credit for it. Mariel
liked this plan as it kept both their hands clean.
Michael could already see Mariel's mind ticking over as she calculated
ways to use the rumourmongering kindred of the city to spread any number
of lies about Ralph throughout the city.
Mariel stated that she'd probably use the Gangrel oratory network either
via West L.A.'s own Gangrel sweeper or by owing Marius a favour. Michael
noted with satisfaction that regardless of which method she chose, the
rumours wouldn't have either him, his barony or any of his coterie as a
source.
Michael's three nights of meetings had, in his opinion, been a moderate
success. He had reduced the likelihood of trouble between Priss and Victor
considerably, put his idea for a better kindred L.A. in the mind of his new
mentor Isaac Abrams, began the task of undermining Ralph Harwood and had
made some headway in gaining control over the unusual discipline he had
inherited as part of his heritage as a Toreador of the Volgirre bloodline.
Scene Seven - Vacancies
Damsel - Brujah 'Den Mother' of Nines Crew |
Michael's minimal requirements for residence were that the kindred kept to
an allocated feeding ground and fed without killing. Nines however still saw
this as forcing kindred to exist under a Barons whims. Michael had contained
his frustration with Nines and instead took the offer to Damsel. She had
been more open to the possibilities and had made the offer known despite her
mentor Nines objections. Three kindred had come to him via Damsel and one
surprisingly via Marius. A fifth had arrived independently. Each had
petitioned for a feeding ground within the North eastern baronies of Michael
Tomassio, now he had to make a decision on each. He decided to deal with the
three Brujah recommended by Damsel first.
Alex Ivanov - Brujah Independent Anarch - San Fernando |
Haydon Monroe was a tall and well built Brujah from San Francisco who had
moved to the Free States as his clans withdrawal from the Camarilla has
resulted in his feeding ground being stolen. In his words the Prince was
doing "Fuck all about it...". He hated Prince Vannevar of San
Francisco specifically and the Camarilla in general. Michael decided that
an enemy of Vannevar might be useful to keep about. Michael granted him a
feeding ground on the border of Pasadena and Glendale. This was close
enough so that the coterie could pay attention to his activities, but far
enough away that he didn't feel ruled. Keeping him close enough to observe
was a result of Daniel's input. The Banu Haqim was suspicious about the
timing of an 'enemy of Vannevar' arriving at the barony so soon after he
had eliminated a team of scouts from that very domain.
Sabina Fisher was a Brujah who reminded Michael of Damsel in that every
second sentence could be summarised as 'Anarch is the best idea ever..." Michael was empathetic enough to get the impression that her bravado
was all front and that she was secretly looking for somewhere to stay
where she'd not be expected to join a gang. As she had no preferences
about location, Michael allocated her a small area of Glendale. Due to her
independent nature Michael didn't want her to feel like she was under his
thumb so gave her some room to stretch her wings. As long as she lived by
his rules he was largely indifferent to her activities anyway. He did foresee that she might become useful as a recruiter for his own cause should he be able to convince her of it's obvious superiority
Cai Arias - Toreador Independent Anarch - Pasadena |
Max was the kindred who had been sent to him by Marius. 'Max' was a
scruffy Gangrel of indeterminate gender who just wanted an area to 'farm'.
They seemed to have no real interest in people, and were definitely not
aggressive enough to be of use to The Wilds pack or Marius which is
probably why they were pointed in Michael's direction. They were however
quite happy to "Keep an eye out." for any threats to the barony if
they passed through his feeding ground. They also had a female ghoul who
was slightly better dressed than them but not by much. Max did seem quite
attached to them though. Michael allocated them an area near the border
between his domain and that of El Hermandad. Hopefully that would help
keep the pressure off his actual sweepers. He didn't expect Max to
intervene, but simply getting the word out would be good enough at the
moment.
With his meetings complete and the business of being Baron completed,
Michael hoped he could now actually get some time to do some actual
painting.
In Conclusion
I like to do a round-up of how the session went in these features but
if you couldn't give a shit what I think then feel free to skip this
bit...
Not much to say about this one. However if you're reading this during the Covid epidemic then please wear a Mask. It's to protect others, not yourself and that should be reason enough...
