Malifaux 2nd Edition Announcement.

So the rumours have been around for some time, but now we finally have an official announcement. I'll copy the actual information below and then afterwards I'll tell you what changes it's going to require to some of my Malifaux coverage on this blog...

Malifaux 2nd Edition will be pre-released August 15 (during Gen Con 2013) with a general release by October. In the mean time we plan to tease you with new art, new models, new characters, and the ... Public Beta for Malifaux 2E.

So what does that mean for the blog?

Firstly, I don't think there's much point in me creating tutorials for every aspect of version 1.5 of Malifaux though I'm still happy to create them on request for specific aspects of the game should anybody wish me to do so. I'll use the existing tutorials as a basis for new ones when version 2.0 arrives as knowing what has changed will help people to transition from one rule-set to the other...hopefully...

Secondly, I'll be continuing with the 'Unboxing' series as I doubt that any of the new plastic models will be getting re-done any-time soon though I'm unlikely to do them on any of the older metal figures when I purchase them.

There's been a lot of knee-jerk reactions to some of the rule changes that have been mentioned so far after the Wyrd guys did the rounds of the various Malifaux podcasts. However, I think we need to wait till we see how they integrate with the rule-set as a whole before we start getting all worried, lol.

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.

  1. I'm looking forward to some of the rules clarifications and hopefully the streamlining, but I'm a little worried that the upgrades and having multiple tiers of minions will complicate things for new players. As it is, the upgrades might go the same route as the "location rules" where, while fluffy and interesting, are under utilized for the sake of keeping things simple.

    1. My concern is that we're due the same problems that occurred with 40K where what we needed was 5.1 and what we got was 25.1.

I too think that upgrades aren't the way to go. I liked the fact that the model matched the card and that the rules were set. Upgrades (especially ones that add extra rules) generally create balance issues. Multiple tiers of minions also seems unnecessary...

Hopefully they have a plan and that the changes will integrate together as a whole rather than creating a bloody mess, lol.

    2. If they make the upgrades optional, like the 'location rules' then I think it will be okay. From what I understand, most tournaments don't even utilize those. Same might hold true for the upgrades. The last thing I want is for one of my masters to have an entire page of upgrade options a la 40k. Keeping it to where your opponent doesn't have to have memorized every little nuance of your crew is what keeps the game running smoothly.

  2. I have been harping on Wyrd to do merchandizing to help them make more money (which also converts to "free" advertising) so they can ease the stress of producing new models and books.

A cool T-shirt with the Lady Justice art on it. People will go "Wow! What is that? Who is this?"

    Or a Viktorias coffee cup?

    Ophelia A1 sized poster anybody?

"Malifaux" brand gaming aids like Strategy / Scheme cards (like those Ratty ones but printed on good quality cardstock / plastic card)?

People will buy these things not only to support Malifaux but also because its cool stuff that people want and need.

I foresee 2.0 to hit players who buy specific models to play specific crews/lists because their old crews/lists will be invalidated and they need to either buy new models to bulk up their crews or in extreme cases, quit the system because their stuff got nerfed "hard".

Guys who own almost all the models of "X" faction, won't get hurt much though.

    1. I'm curious about how they're going to deal with the fact that an updated ruleset and changes to the card format will effect the cards people already have. I have over a hundred laminated stat cards that are apparently going to need changing or extensively FAQing/errataing...

    2. I'm okay with my master's rules changing, just so long as their play style is roughly the same and its still possible to win occasionally with them. I have to say, Malifaux is a game where people frequently own multiple crews, so one getting nerfed here and there doesn't set someone out as big of a chunk of change as say, an entire codex getting nerfed in 40k. I'll come right out and say my big two reasons for picking the crews that I have were 1) they looked cool, and 2) I liked the play-style.

And regarding the new card thing: I hope they make them either free to download or very cheap to purchase. I'm fine with printing them out and re-laminating some, but they need to be a bit more on the spot getting the new cards available to people. It has now been nearly 6 months and I don't think the errata'd Hamelin cards for his crew have been available for purchase, only download.

    3. Indeed.

Wyrd had been off the ball when it came to their stat cards. A year or so ago, our local Henchman tried to help the community get replacements for some old statcards / error statcards and that exercise took longer than expected because of some cock-up(s) at the Wyrd end.

With HUNDREDS of cards needed to be overhauled... the margin for error is significantly increased.

It might take as long as 6 months for the Malifaux community to settle down post 2.0 release because of a whole range of FAQ-ing blah blah...
