Unboxing Malifaux - Von Schills 'Hired Guns' Starter Set

I'm carefully avoiding making German jokes in the intro...

The 'Hired Guns' box contains enough parts for seven miniatures...namely Von Schill, his Totem the Steam Trunk (3SS), Freikorps Librarian (7SS), Freikorps Specialist (8SS), Freikorps Trapper (6SS)  and two Freikorpsmenn (5SS each). It also contains stat cards for each one and five upgrade cards four of which are for Von Schill and one that's for any Freikorps, Master or Henchman.

This makes the Soulsstone value of the box...

Von Schill (0), Steam Trunk (3), Freikorps Librarian (7), Freikorps Specialist (8), Freikorps Trapper (6), Freikorpsmenn (5, 5) Total (34) or (40) with a maximum Soulstone cache and (46) with maximum 'out of the box' upgrades.

The box has two sprues in it as well as the aforementioned cards...

Stat Cards.

Lets have a look at each of these in turn...should there be any assembly issues with any of the models then they will be listed in the appropriate section and you can view larger versions of the smaller pictures by clicking on them. Here's the instructions as well...just in case...

Von Schill.

The Sprue

Assembled
Has the now seemingly obligatory two part head but otherwise has no issues...you might want to be careful with the thin part hanging from his belt...luckily it's not a separate piece.

When I first assembled this model he ended up looking like he was skipping through the flowers waving his gun in the air...like so...

I subsequently reposed the model a bit so he was pointing his gun somewhere a bit more logical Not sure if it was an issue with how I assembled it or an issue with the model but I'm guessing it was the former, lol.

Steam Trunk.

The Sprue

Assembled
The wheels in the tracks are in two parts that can be glued together the wrong way up fairly easily and then the slots in them wont line up with the grooves in the tracks so be careful Also the small wheel only has detail on one side so make sure you put the appropriate one in the appropriate track. There's also a lot of tiny parts that go in the inside section so I've included a close-up picture for you all...

Freikorps Librarian.

Freikorps Specialist.

The Sprue

Assembled
I assembled all the model with the exception of the backpack which I did last...this was a big mistake as it made aligning the tubes with their equivalent points on the body a bit tricky...well...impossible in fact as I had no room to manoeuvre. My recommendation is to dry fit the backpack, arms and related parts together first and make sure that the positioning is perfect before assembling. I'm going to have to make link pieces from something to fill the gaps on my version...I'd like to avoid any-one else having to...

Freikorps Trapper

The Sprue

Assembled
Amazingly enough another issue free model...just bear in mind that the cloak does rather get in the way if you put it on first...

  2. I'm super new and I have a question. I'm noticing all these box sets, yet can't find them in the online store. Not even the Warstore.. This one for example. Where can I pick it up?

    1. Some of these I purchased during GenCon where they were available early. This crew should be available this month according to Wyrds most recent announcement...which can be found at the following link...

  3. Being a German I like that German style on von Schill and his boys...but they are still Freikorps, not Friekorps. ;-)
But, as usual, great review! Thanks!
