Unboxing Malifaux - Ulix's 'Hog Wild' Starter Box

The Bayou...where getting a bacon sandwich is quite dangerous indeed...

ULIX
Generally regarded to be slipperier than a greased rattlesnake, Ulix is far from the common or garden Bayou Gremlin. He is master of hogs and all things hoggish, and spends much of his time tending his piggy charges deep within the swamp, quite content with his lot.

Ulix understands pigs better than any gremlin alive, and gremlins from across the Bayou seek out his help on any pig-related issues (of which Gremlins have plenty).

One could be forgiven for overlooking this rough-looking Bayou denizen with a game leg, laden down with bow, traps, hog-rope and an assortment of other tools of his trade, but where Ulix really excels is in his uncommon cunning. He possesses a mind sharper than Lady Justice’s greatsword and just as quick, and regularly runs rings around unwelcome intruders and other unsavory individuals through deception, misdirection and plain old barefaced lies.

This skullduggery is further complimented by the conception that Gremlins are, by and large, fairly stupid creatures. Ulix would not seek to refute this claim nor has he been above exploiting it – his quick wit and savvy have served him extremely well in trading with surrounding villages, especially with Cluck Slump the poultry farmer whom Ulix has, on at least two occasions, sold him his own legs.

Ulix’s constant companion is his faithful hog hound, Penelope. They make a formidable pair and are more than capable of holding their own against the worst Malifaux has to offer.

The 'Hog Wild' box contains enough parts for six miniatures...namely Ulix, his Totem Penelope (2SS), Old Major (9SS) and three Wild Boar (6SS each). It also contains stat cards for each one and six upgrade cards four of which are for Ulix, one for Old Major or Gracie and one that's for Ulix or any model with the 'Pig' type.

This makes the Soulsstone value of the box...

Ulix (0), Penelope (2), Old Major (9), Wild Boar (6, 6, 6) Total (29) or (32) with a maximum Soulstone cache and (41) with maximum 'out of the box' upgrades.

Sprues
The box has two sprues in it as well as the aforementioned cards. Here's pictures of both sides of them...

Stat Cards
Wyrd Games didn't like my publishing pictures of both sides of the stat cards so you'll have to make do with this...

Lets have a look at each of these models in turn. Should there be any assembly issues with any of the models then they will be listed in the appropriate section and you can view larger versions of the smaller pictures or instruction pictures by clicking on them.

Instructions

Some General Notes on Assembly
Many of these models contain quite small parts so depending on how dexterous you are you might consider getting yourself some tweezers. Dry-fitting is also always a good idea in case a part needs a tiny bit of extra filing or filling as some of the fits are quite tight. Where the parts on the sprue are quite thin (chains, weapon shafts, cables and the like) then it might be better to remove parts with a sharp scalpel rather than cutters.

All these are based on Wyrd Games 'Bayou' base inserts in 30, 40 or 50mm as appropriate that are sold separately I'm afraid.

Ulix
The Sprue

Assembled
Both the peg leg and the walking stick are quite thin as is the string on his bow so take care with these parts.

Penelope
The Sprue

Assembled
Three parts should cause you no issues.

Old Major
The Sprue

Assembled
Only the 'medal' on the neck of the model could be considered small but even that has a decent attachment point and four of the six pieces are large and easy to handle.

Wild Boars

The Sprue

All these models consist of four or five parts and are very easy to assemble. You may need a tiny bit of filling on some and there's a few mould lines to scrape off but other than that these models are simplicity itself to put together.

Wild Boar 1

Wild Boar 2

Wild Boar 3

Thoughts and comments are (as usual) most welcome.
