Vampire the Masquerade - 5th Edition Campaign Characters

Were starting a 5th Edition Vampire the Masquerade campaign set in Los Angeles with three Ancillae vampires sent to see if the Anarch 'Free States' can be undermined by agents of the Camarilla as the last attempt at a direct takeover didn't work quite so well. The coterie also has three trusted allies, a Banu Haqim hiding from his sire, an Autarkis Gangrel in need of feeding rights and a Nosferatu accountant sent by their sponsors to assist in their mission as well as a number of ghouls.

Each has been initially created as a Neonate Vampire though were given freedom of which Skill distribution to use. Bonus XP spend went slightly over the 15 but it was only a speciality and a 1 dot skill here and there. My intention was to get them to roughly Ancillae level over the course of the first chronicle so their characters developed organically.

Broadly speaking I'm giving out 3XP per session. I was also giving them a single XP per session that could only be spent on assets for the coterie as a whole, but as of session 95 I've stopped and instead I give them equivalents as they earn them in session. As of Session 95 they also now only receive 2XP per session as at their level of power, gaining new skills becomes trickier.

The Kindred now known as Michael Tomassio was born in 1877 into a wealthy family as Paolo “Paul” Tomassio to an Italian father and an English mother. Growing up Paul was a gifted artist, historian, writer and debater. After his education at University he elected to undertake a more modern version of the grand tour visiting Europe to see such places as Rome, Venice and Paris.

It was during his time spent in Paris that he encountered a stunningly attractive woman who introduced herself as Stéphanie Mayoux. Stéphanie was immediately enthralling, knowledgeable about art, culture and politics. The pair met each night and spent many hours discussing the finger points of culture, belief and politics. Stéphanie asked that given the chance would Tomassio wish to continue in this existence forever. In the year of 1903 Stéphanie embraced Paul Tomassio.

The pair spent over a decade together spending time in the courts of the Price of Paris François Villon. They attended many parties and whilst the education in Kindred politics, history and bloodlines were limited Paul established himself as a social operator and harpy of some ability. After just over a decade the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand escalated tensions in mainland Europe and Stéphanie took her childe with her as she fled over the channel returning to Tomassio’s native country. Upon arrival he changed his name to Peter.

As a fit looking 26-year-old the now Peter Tomassio feared being conscripted for the Great War. Aware that his dealings with mortals and his preference for a certain type of hunting it would not do to look a coward. Tomassio instead masqueraded as a member of the clergy, as those of the faith were not required to serve. Listening to the troubles of others, to the tales of loss and consoling them during the hardships of the war awoke an empathy that Tomassio had thought he had long since lost. He held special late-night services and confessions, to be able to be visible to his congregation. He told Stéphanie it was merely to keep up his ruse, and the fact that he got some measure of satisfaction from helping others he kept to himself. It was during this time that Tomassio first read about Michael of Constantinople and of the vision that that City represented.

After the Great War ended “Peter” remained nominally a member of the clergy and involved himself in the social and artistic scenes of both his Clan and the mortal population. Whilst he still attended the grand parties held at Elysium some of the more outlandish fashions, particularly those that involved harm to mortals were now more disturbing than they had been previously. During this relative peace Mayoux and occasionally Tomassio travelled back and forth to the court of Paris. Prince Villon had survived the Great War and held court much as he had done since Tomassio’s first visit. Tomassio was rarely at court instead choosing to lose himself in the art, architecture and culture of his adopted second home.

As with much of his existence, war dictated the next stage in Tomassio’s journey. The rise of Nazi Germany and the defeat of the French Army hastened the retreat of Mayoux and her Childe with both returning to the relative safety of Britain and the City of London. After the war, and over time Tomassio’s view of the Camarilla changed.  Leadership was necessary but the iron fisted approach of the Camarilla required reform in order to achieve long term success. Constantinople was a dream, a dream he wanted to bring to fruition again, but it involved many ideas which bordered on the ideals of the Anarchs. Political freedom, intellectual and philosophical debate, self-determination and a belief that Kindred can be more than just predators.

Tomassio eventually fell in love with a fellow Kindred who sympathised with the Anarch beliefs. Whilst his partner did not actively oppose or destabilise the Camarilla their political beliefs caused a cooling of the relationship between Tomassio and his Sire, they simply remained cordial. When the Second Inquisition attacked London, Tomassio was at his haven. He received a phone call from his lover simply telling him to run, to escape – that they were being attacked. Then the line went dead. Tomassio used all his resources, boons and favours to action his escape. Mayoux was at the Prince’s Court debating when the attack commenced. Tomassio had tried to get to her, but the number of foes between him and the Court caused him to swiftly reconsider as did the sound of distant gunfire and the roaring flames of a hidden city on fire.

Tomassio fled west, to the United States of America where he adopted the name Michael in homage to Michael of Constantinople. Perhaps in the new land of opportunity Michael could make the dream of Constantinople a reality for the benefit of all Kindred. Michael does not know if his Sire survived and is not sure if her survival would be for better or for worse. It was in America where he once again came into contact with the Camarilla who offered him an opportunity to help them with a project to take over Los Angeles. Seeing a rare opportunity to put his theories into practice he accepted the offer...

Ghouled by a notable Brujah Archon of the Camarilla who witnessed his impressive street brawling abilities she supplemented his brutal self-taught skills with weapons and martial arts training so as to use him as a bodyguard for her while she slept. He performed this task successfully for many years but after being grievously wounded defending his mistresses haven from a Sabbat raid his life was saved by the embrace.

His mistress, now his sire introduced him to the rules he'd now have to live by, some of the history of the clan of which he was now a member and to some of the members of her own group of fighters and revolutionaries but being interested only in his abilities as a fighter neglected to provide him with anything approaching an education leaving him functionally illiterate. Now the Camarilla has once again turned it's attention to LA his sire has been prompted to provide some-one to ensure that the other agents survive long enough to get their jobs done and she has nominated him for this dubious honour.

In the month he's spent in LA after his clandestine arrival the poor and homeless living on the streets near his haven have become his eyes and ears as well as an occasional source of blood in return for his protection from those who would seek to exploit the vulnerable. Several have even shown themselves to be useful as retainers and have been given more involved duties. He now manages the coteries two brothels and the number of street girls they have inherited from the takeovers of other gangs resources. Seeing his illiteracy as a burden and impediment to progress he has ghouled an intelligent but brutal young woman known as Sarah who is providing him an education in return for training in his skills and of course, perpetual youth and immortality.

Vin's reputation as a formidable warrior has been bolstered with victories against Elder kindred such as Edward Vignes, The Tzimisce terrorising the Nosferatu within the Warrens and notable victories against the thin-blood rebels attempting to start a war within the Free States and the Gargoyle protecting the missing chantry of former Primogen Maximilian Strauss. This has become a double edged sword for the coterie as though the intimidation factor is useful, his infamy can sometimes put even allies on the defensive as they wonder if they are next on the list.

Embraced in the middle East by Edward Kaya, a Banu Haqim looking for new blood in the forces seeking justice against various of their middle-eastern enemies and he was impressed by Daniel not restricting his moral duty to just the enemy but applying his sense of justice to everyone. When he chose to let a soldier who he knew had committed atrocities against civilians die because he knew he would get away with it, they offered him the embrace. Disheartened and jaded by his time in the military, he accepted and learned the ways of the Banu Haqim

He spent years working with his sire as a paid assassin though often the payment was in blood and where necessary freely eliminating those deemed dangerous to the clan or it's allies. He also took the Banu Haqims scholarly pursuits to heart, believing knowledge to be power and developing his knowledge of law as he did. Eventually Daniel and his sire grew apart as it became increasingly obvious that the targets weren't the monsters that Daniel had been led to believe but were simply enemies of the Ur-Shulgi loyal faction to which his sire belonged. This revelation lead to a violent confrontation and his sire tried to kill Daniel. He fled, never staying in one place for too long but despite that still had multiple run-ins over the years that he was lucky to escape from.
He continued his studies wherever he could but particularly felt close and at home in the British library in London, which he considered to be the greatest repository of information in the world. The fact that London is now effectively off limits to kindred and with travel becoming difficult the separation from the place he holds so dear has been a significant blow. Now many of the Banu Haqim have joined the Camarilla and despite his own sense of law and order causing him to more closely align with them than the Anarchs he has nonetheless based himself in an Anarch domain hoping to avoid the relentless pursuit of his sire. An Autarkis Gangrel named Marius has given him the assistance needed to make Los Angeles his home in return for his service when necessary and Daniel has re-entered the medical field that first drew him to kindred attention. Marius has as yet made no demands but Daniel knows it's only a matter of time before these debts will need to be paid.

He is currently engaged by the coterie as a fixer of sorts and has a considerable talent for cleaning up the messes left by less Masquerade considerate kindred.

She fought in the Second Gulf War, although officially she was not in a combat capacity, Cpl Romero served as a dog handler travelling with the convoys attempting to help find and defuse IEDs and repel insurgent attackers under small arms fire. Upon her return to the United States and her home state of Oregon she distanced herself from people possibly due to her experiences.

Hope took up outdoor pursuits, wilderness survival, hunting and developing a rapport of sorts with a local pack of wolves. It was then that she met her sire. In typical Gangrel fashion he embraced her and left her to fend for herself until she had proven herself. After a few years of running with William her sire, he embraced another. Unlike with Hope, William taught this new Gangrel immediately and when Hope objected to him not keeping up with their traditions the two turned upon her. She managed to escape with her unlife due to the intervention of the wolf pack. Fleeing south to California with one of the pack by her side Hope arrived in the outskirts of L.A vowing to get stronger so one day she may find her sire and defeat him.

Marius has provided her with a serviceable new identity and Haven and began giving her basic training in complimentary disciplines so she could patrol the outskirts of his domain. Now that the coterie of Michael Tomassio has effectively taken over Pasadena he has decided that perhaps this would be a more productive use of her skills and help with the security of a new domain with which he has some influence.

She now acts as a census keeper of sorts, patrolling the barony of Pasadena for poachers and intruders as well as taking on the role of Scourge when uninvited guests refuse to leave. With the recent acquisition of three Gangrel rendered homeless and/or unemployed by political upheaval in the Free States these have been given similar responsibilities to Hope. Though they answer to Michael in theory, their night to night activities are monitored by Hope.

'Mr Hertz' as he's currently known was embraced during the bootlegger era in Chicago. Already in his sixties before his Embrace in 1926 and frail and gaunt due to his disease riddled body his appearance only grew worse as the Nosferatu's clan curse took hold.

In life he was a highly skilled mob accountant but was dying from the disease known commonly at the time as consumption. He was turned by a Nosferatu on the orders of notable Camarilla Ventrue Horatio Ballard who wished to maintain their access to this useful resource. He knew little of his sire as his embrace was a purely business arrangement without any real emotional or other connection and to be fair this suited Mr Hertz just fine.

Though many kindred are concerned about the pursuit of power and influence Mr Hertz treats the laundering of money and managing of illegal assets as a challenge in of itself and has little interest in accumulating the trappings of wealth himself. He does however take a token payment of two percent of the money he successfully legitimises as he is aware that the appearance of a complete lack of ambition would be looked upon by other kindred as weakness and leave him open to attempts at manipulation.

He is served by a small army of rats that are sustained by his own vitae and reside within the useless areas of his body, effectively turning himself into an un-living hive of vermin. Those who witness him at work may find themselves a little unnerved by the sight of dozens of tiny rodents organising paperwork, fetching paper-clips, post-it notes and pens while their master is hard at work concealing his employers ill-gotten gains.

Though he has kept up to date with modern business methodology and has enough computer skills to deal with the internet age he still prefers if at all possible to transfer the information to a paper format and work on it the old fashioned way. As he often points out to the younger internet obsessed Nosferatu "Hacking is bullshit without some-one who understands the information to tell you if it's actually worth anything..."

He does still have the trappings of the gangster he once was and his Thompson Submachine Gun, collection of Luger pistols and his stiletto flick knife are perfectly maintained and quite functional.
He has recently been approached by a representative of the notable Ventrue, Fiorenza Savona about enlisting his assistance to locate money embezzled from Camarilla accounts by an ambitious underling. Unfortunately this would involve a trip to Los Angeles...

Eric was always curious. He ravenously devoured information where he found it in his quest for knowledge. His need to know however didn't stop with academic research. He found that he had a knack for digging up the little secrets that the people around him kept, a guilty pleasure here, adultery there... unpunished crimes? 

Realising that these secret lives were around him every day, Eric began to build cases of evidence to anonymously give to the authorities. His uncanny ability to find information attracted the attention of his sire, Jane Johnson or 'JJ' for short who was impressed by his technical skills and amused that Eric used those skills to whistle blow or humiliate those he felt deserved it.


As a member of the Nosferatu Clan, Eric is unpleasant to look at. His skin is pallid, grey and gaunt, his eyes bloodshot and his features drawn and severe, Typically, when out in the world he wears motorcycle leathers and a helmet or loose fitting hoodies and scarves to hide his disfigurement. Despite his appearance Eric is surprisingly upbeat and cheerful.

Franklin 'Frank' Atkins - Police Captain
Franklin was ghouled after being identified as the police contact of the former baron of Pasadena, Edward Vignes by Michael Tomassio.

Michael's enforcer Vin now ensures that the officers preference for prostitutes are taken care of while the coteries gang 'The Apostles' take care of his recreational drug needs. He repays the coteries indulgence in this area with advance notice of any threats to their interests and by ensuring that his fellow officers are less than diligent in certain investigations and filing of evidence and reports. Michael is also helping his career by pointing him in the direction of cases that benefit both his and the officers interests.

Franklin now has had (with the coteries assistance) a number of high profile successes and is well on his way to higher office where he and Michael can be of even greater benefit to one another.

A survivor on the street for many years making a living in any way she could from petty theft through to prostitution. The latter career ended at the same time as her pimps life as a newcomer to the area eliminated all the pimps in various horrendously violent ways and intimidated all the gangs into leaving.

Since then though crime and prostitution are still ways of life in Vin's turf those people of the street know that as long as they are willing to be his eyes and ears and indulge his slightly odd blood related fetishes they will have his protection. 'Sarah' however now holds a special place amongst his followers and has been passing on her self-taught education to him in exchange for the skills she needs to defend herself and of course the highly addictive vitae she consumes each month directly from his veins.

He has now began to delegate many of the duties involved in the running of the sex trade under his control to her and she has effectively become his personal assistant. She is also possibly one of the only people in existence that Vin has any feelings towards outside of loyalty.

Vin has spent the last two years training her intensely in combat, firearms and the use of her basic disciplines. Her skills as a leader have also enhanced considerably as Vin gives her more and more responsibility. When necessary, Vin channels his own powers of Potence, Celerity and Fortitude into his own blood which is then passed onto Sarah, making her a potential threat to even supernatural beings.

Keith Chang - Investigator and Assassin
Keith is a military veteran given compassionate leave when his family were killed in a botched home invasion. He subsequently became addicted to prescription pain killers when his previous medicinal use due to injuries sustained in the Gulf became habitual due to depression.

Having concluded he had nothing to live for he decided to go out doing something meaningful and using his military skills began a minor crusade against crime. After starting with assault he moved onto the murder of criminals and began to draw the attention of the authorities to Pasadena.

Tasked with his removal Daniel took the somewhat unorthodox solution and instead of killing him, recruited him. He has been educating him in more subtle methods of assassination and has been pointing him in the direction of the enemies of the coterie.

Mr Hertz's Ghouls
Reuben Hart - Ghoul Retainer, Apostles Leader

The Apostles have been reborn in Pasadena from the ashes of the Line 20's gang formally based in Downtown and pushed out by the relentless onslaught of kindred controlled local groups. Their leader has always been Reuben Hart a gang member who created a fictional figurehead for the gang known as Santiago Francisco in order to prevent his own assassination.

After using them in his own schemes several times the Malkavian Roach ghouled their leader and offered them a new home in Pasadena on the condition that they could wipe out the current gang that were getting in his and the coteries way. With the aid of several of the coteries more combat capable members the rivals were destroyed and the Apostles took over their operations. The gangs primary source of income is drug sales though they also operate several brothels overseen by the Brujah Vin and have been spreading their influence through the front of a neighbourhood watch group sponsored by the gallery itself.

As far as the authorities are concerned Santiago is dead and the Line 20's have been exterminated and this suits everyone involved perfectly. Though initially numbering a mere eighty or so members the gang has recently expanded into the territories of the three remaining criminal organisations of significance after all three of their leaders were killed on the same day in what the police still believe to be separate incidents but which were in fact the work of the more subtle of the coteries two scourges Daniel, on the orders of Roach.

With these other major gangs now integrated into the Apostles and their resources re-distributed the gang has almost doubled in size and is now the criminal force in Pasadena. With the disappearance of Roach, Mr Hertz now controls the Apostles and has expanded their interests from drug dealing to now encompass the whole gamut of organised crime.

Drafted to serve in Vietnam at the age of sixteen and when he came home he was attracted to the hippy scene in order to get over the experiences. He began to see visions while tripping on various drugs and his perception of reality became somewhat subjective.

His sire was a fellow hippy Malkavian who turned him as a joke in order to make his visions actually real. He eventually left the hippy thing behind in the late seventies and changed his following to bands like Led Zeppelin etc. before he moved into the Portland scene in the nineties and never really left it. He currently deals various recreational drugs mostly to college kids and some lower middle class kids also.

He now runs the coteries considerable drug empire and through his ghoul Reuben a street gang known as the Acolytes who maintain the groups criminal enterprises.

  1. It keeps being brought up so I want your opinion hope vs vin? My money is on vin he's more combat focused while hope has better versatility

    1. On a purely mechanical level Vin has the edge. However if it was to be done in character it becomes far more even as then Hope gets to utilise other abilities that might even things out.

Hmmm, I love watching them grow and evolve both as characters and combatants so I often check back here every once in awhile, however sometimes there's a new addition to the stats/etc and while I often notice the change sometimes it blends in or doesnt seem new. Could u highlight in blue or etc what new update they have each time please so as it's easier to notice. Like right now I think hope just got lupine expert 3 but I'm not sure. I hate to be a bother, either way I'm loving the content so thanks
