Unnatural Selections: reviews of note

13th Age Glorantha & The Glorantha Sourcebook

Andrew Logan Montgomery's Otherworlds of Fiction, Magic & Gaming blog recently reviewed two new Chaosium releases with considerable depth, insight and perspicacity—in his own words, Andrew's reviews "run deep".

The books he covered are 13th Age Glorantha and The Glorantha Sourcebook, both currently available from Chaosium in PDF (hardbacks coming later in the year).
"13G gets an enthusiastic thumbs up... It is clear the authors love Glorantha, and their giddy enthusiasm is on every page. It is infectious. RuneQuest always felt to be like a "precise Glorantha," while Heroquest was an "erudite Glorantha" (with scholarly focus on myth, narrative, etc). 13G is a hot-blooded passionate Glorantha."
"For my money this was the best overview of Gloranthan mythology we have seen... vividly told, beautifully illustrated, and inspirational... Drawing on long out-of-print sources, and including new materials, this belongs in the collection of new Glorantha fans and old timers alike."
Andrew proclaims that Glorantha has always had a special place in his heart ("had I not encountered it in my junior high school D&D Club I doubt I would have gone on to get a Masters in mythology and epic literature"), and he invites the reader to "grab a cup of coffee, pour a glass of wine, and settle in for the latest dive into one of gaming's most extraordinary and influential worlds". We can only encourage you to do so!

Licensee Focus

Our friends at Darker Hues Studios have just informed us that their licensed Call of Cthulhu supplement HARLEM UNBOUND has been acquired for the library collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution Anacostia Community Museum and The Newark Museum. These acquisitions are an acknowledgement of book's "artistic, scholarly and educational value". How cool is that?
A further cool and somewhat Lovecraftian factor is that you must go to a special collections area to request the book and have a librarian bring you a tome to read there.

We're sure they'd want a copy for the Orne Library's Restricted Collection at Miskatonic University too—speaking of that...

Get ready to enter the Miskatonic University Restricted Collection, very soon!

A quick note from Susan, our board games line editor:
Exciting news—our next board game is close!
Last year, after some 25 years away, Chaosium got back into boardgames. This first foray brought together German board game wizard Reiner Knizia and "the Grand Shaman of Games" himself Greg Stafford, for the family game Khan of Khans set in the mythic world of Glorantha.
Very soon we'll be back with a Kickstarter for our first Lovecraftian board game since 1987! I'm excited to be working with Reiner again, exploring the world of horror in a fast-paced, fun-filled, push-your-luck game.
Set in the treacherous and terrifying Restricted Collection of Miskatonic University's Orne Library, the game features grimoires, elder signs, academic politics and madness — and that endlessly renewable resource, graduate students!
When the time comes we hope you'll join us on our journey by supporting this Kickstarter and make the Miskatonic University game a reality!
Kickstarter Launch Date: late April!

What is Ab Chaos?
(...from Ab Chaos #7, May 31 1992)

Ab - Latin "from"
Chaos - (1) Any condition or place of total disorder (modern vernacular); (2) the disordered state of unformed matter which preceded creation (since Milton, Paradise Lost); (3) the dark, empty space which preceded creation (Greek Mythology); (4) the [formerly] Californian roleplaying game company.

Ab Chaos is an informal newsletter for Chaosium fans. Through our history we have tried to serve the players and gamemasters through craft and art as well as (and sometimes at the expense of) marketing and moneymaking. We appreciate your loyalty, and offer this communication to those who are curious about us, beyond the mere "product".

It is planned to be informal and irregular. We are, after all, not the Orderium.
